Is This The End for Chris Evans as Captain America

Chris Evans is currently busy filming Avengers: Infinity War alongside the other major heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He won’t be retiring all too soon since he is already confirmed to return for that movie’s 2019 sequel. Meaning he has to fulfill his Marvel contract first. After that, there is no word is he will negoiate an extention. The subject matter has be spoken about before, but Chris has downplayed the likelihood that he’ll switch away from Cap once his Marvel deal expires.

“With the shield, it’s a matter of whether or not Marvel wants to keep knocking, but my contract is up after the last Avengers movies.”

Which leads us to this. A new Esquire profile on the actor mentions that he’s “hurting all over” as he begins his gruelling workouts for Infinity War.

Here is an except:

“He just started his workout routine the day before to get in shape for the next two Captain America films. The movies will be shot back to back beginning in April. After that, no more red- white-and-blue costume for the 35-year-old. He will have fulfilled his contract.”

Which means he doesn’t have to return to film because both films will have already been shot and his contract fulfilled.

Hold on Marvel fans, before you start panicking the profile refers to Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel as “Captain America films”, which they technically are not. They’re ensemble Marvel films.

What does this mean?

Digital Spy reached out to Chris’s representatives for clarification, and here is what they said:

Evans told us:

“I gave an interview once where I said I was gonna try and focus a little more on directing, and that’s true, it’s what I’m excited about right now. But acting is still… I love acting, in no way am I walking away from acting.

He added:

“With the shield, it’s a matter of whether or not Marvel wants to keep knocking, but my contract is up after the last Avengers movies.”

Basically, it appears that his contract is up after Infinity War, so Chris’s Marvel future might be undetermined at this time, because there was the interlude that he was working with the Black Panther since he has Bucky, the winter soldier.

Avengers: Infinity War opens on May 4, 2018. The sequel follows in 2019.
