Elba is said to be Gunn’s only choice for the recast, with them having both been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more cosmic entries (Elba’s character Heimdall was killed in Avengers: Infinity War.
Now with Gunn rehired by Disney to film Guardian Vol. 3, he now has a sturdy foot in both the DCU and MCU.
In addition to the news of Idris replacing Smith, Gunn has renamed the sequel as The Suicide Squad. The film is slated to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
