Flip and see the new 5-minute Independence Day Resurgence trailer on the flip…
This time around, 20th Century Fox not only did they throw in the kitchen sink the studio gives a rather detailed sense of how the narrative will unfold. We learn Will Smith was killed and his son will avenge his death, Bill Pullman will be an alien puppet, much like Brent Spiner‘s character was used in the last one, but there will also be a big grandiose speech by Pullman’s ex-president and, possibly, by Sela Ward‘s new president.
The only thing this movie is missing is the drunken antics of Randy Quaid. We also noticed that the humor that helped carry the first film will be tremendously diminished, given largely to Jeff Goldblum‘s character in this round, since Will wasn’t able to be a part of the film. Smith had too many films on his plate to squeeze in Independence Day: Resurgence, but we are hoping that the movie that catapulted Will Smith to super stardom and box office smash can still hold it down with out its Fresh Prince to drive up the box office gross.
We have to admit, the stakes are higher, the cast is impeccable, but sometimes without that one lead that everyone loves, the film may or may not be a box office success. If it does do well like we hope and there is a possibility of a three, maybe Smith could return. And they could say he was abducted by the aliens, tested on and so forth like Quaid’s character. Which could make for another interesting plot line for vengeance.
