The first planet you will be introduced to is Jedha:

Jedha is another world we’ll see, it is small desert moon frosted by a permanent winter. Jedha is home to one of the first civilizations to explore the nature of the Force. It’s a place important to the Jedi, the former protectors of the galaxy. Jedha also serves as a holy site for pilgrims from across the galaxy who seek spiritual guidance. Another major planet that is seen in Rogue One is Scarif.

tropical planet that has been taken over by the Imperial regime. It’s almost ironic that one of the more beautiful planets which is basically a tropical paradise is under Empire control. The planet serves one purpose and that is a major Imperial military installation. Scarif is the principal construction facility for the vast Imperial war machine. The world is enveloped in impenetrable deflector shields and is heavily defended. The planet is completely enveloped inside of a protective shield. If the Rebels were to penetrate it and infiltrate it any meaningful way, it would set back the Imperial effort significantly.
