The Curse of La Llorona stars Sean Patrick Thomas.

La Lorona, Spanish for the Weeping Woman, stems from popular Latin American folklore. It’s a story with cultural significance and variations comparable to the North American urban legend of “the Babysitter and the Man Upstairs.” Like the story of the babysitter, the legend La Llorona has been told across multiple entries of film and television though none quite as high-profile as Chaves’ film.

In 1970s Los Angeles, the legendary ghost La Llorona is stalking the night — and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother, a social worker and her own kids are drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope of surviving La Llorona’s deadly wrath is a disillusioned priest who practices mysticism to keep evil at bay.

Sean Patrick Thomas (Detective Cooper) is a veteran actor of film, television, and stage. His previous film credits include all three films in the successful “Barbershop” franchise; John Sayles’ “Honeydripper”; Darren Aronofsky’s “The Fountain”; “Halloween: Resurrection”; the box office smash “Save The Last Dance,” for which Thomas won two MTV Movie Awards; “Cruel Intentions”; and “Courage Under Fire.”

On the small screen, Thomas starred on the CBS series “The District,” and in the Kenny Leon-directed telefilm “A Raisin in the Sun,” for which he earned an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a TV Movie. He also had recurring roles on a number of series, including “The Good Fight,” “Reaper,” “Lie to Me,” and “Ringer,” as well as voicing the character of Professor Macalester on the animated series “Vixen.” His additional television credits include “Madam Secretary,” “American Horror Story,” “NCIS: New Orleans” and “NCIS.”
