2020 Oscars Predictions: Who Will Get Nominated?

Award season has started and the Golden Globes nominations have already been announced. As the days grow shorter and night long, we get closer to Oscar night. Last year The Academy Awards did something different not having a host and it moved quite nicely.

However, this year there are talks on Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart being the hosts of Oscar night. It could work, just member hosts equal 30 minutes longer show for skits and jokes. Anyways, who will be in the running for an Oscar? Read on to see our 2020 Oscars Predictions…

First up is Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix.

The film has taken everyone by storm and the film was such a huge success that the studio is making a sequel.  Joker will be nominated for Best Picture. Despite its divisiveness among film critics, it is a gritty R-rated drama that got audiences who normally only see CGI fistfights to turn out in droves. This is surely one of Martin Scorsese’s best movies to date. Joker is equal to his films of yore, including Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy.

Jojo Rabbit

At this point in the list, we begin considering movies that will likely be nominated for Best Picture but are increasing long shots of actually winning the award.

Judy

Ths film has a few categories where it should land since there is a lot of buzz surrounding Renée Zellweger’s transformation as well as performance. Jany Temime, the costume designer of the critically acclaimed film “Judy” is also getting major buzz and could as well easily take the win.

Ad Astra

This is the movie that should more than likely get Brad Pitt an Oscar nomination as well as, Best Director and Picture nomination.

1917

Sam Mendes’ World War I epic, 1917, is a technical marvel made only for the big screen. Best Picture Oscars have turned on exactly such visceral power. Set during the bloodiest year of the First World War, the movie offers a microcosm of the Western Front’s singular hell as two British Tommies attempt to deliver a vital message before a whole division is ambushed and slaughtered.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino’s most mature and reflective movie to date and one with a navel-gazing look at his hometown, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is a celebration of a Hollywood gone by and the type of stories the dying studio system used to make. It also further mythologizes its own star system by turning tragic starlet Sharon Tate into the idol of her age.

The Irishman (Netflix)

Martin Scorsese’s Netflix effort, The Irishman, has the hallmarks of the Best Picture winner. The Irishman benefits from Scorsese’s new role as statesman, advocate, and patron saint, for the classical understanding of “cinema.”

The Irishman has a chance to land these categories:

• Best Supporting Actor

Parasite

The film Parasite is going to win the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. That is almost a given for this Bong Joon-ho masterpiece about class. Effortlessly blending comedy, drama, and a heightened sense of tragedy, this is the highest order of filmmaking.

Bombshell

This is the movie that will have three amazing actresses battle it out for Best Supporting Actress in a motion picture this year. The Fox News movie starring Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, and Nicole Kidman proves to be a winner.

• Best Screenplay

• Best Supporting Actress

Dark Water

This is Mark Ruffalo at his best in Dark Water. The film is truly shocking, informative and scary to know how Dupont aka Teflon is still manufacturing unsafe materials to the public. Greed is disgusting and Dark Water is a superb film. Directed by Jay Roach and written by Charles Randolph.

• Best Actor
• Best Supporting Actor

Ford v Ferrari

Ford v Ferrari is an old school Hollywood drama that would’ve appealed to moviegoers just as easily in the ‘50s or ‘60s as it does in the 2010s, that elusive timeless quality achieved by James Mangold should also appeal to Oscar voters. We can see Christian Bale or Matt Damon in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories, but we doubt they will take home a golden statue.

Harriet

Harriet has two key points of entry into the Oscars race: Best Actress, for Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Harriet Tubman, and Best Original Song, for Erivo and co-writer Joshuah Brian Campbell’s “Stand Up.” Either way, it’s progress toward Erivo’s inevitable EGOT.

Harriet has a chance to land these categories:

• Best Adapted Screenplay
• Best Actress
• Best Original Song

Little Women

Saoirse Ronan should count on a fourth Oscar nomination, for Best Actress, for playing Jo March, while Florence Pugh, who plays Amy, is the clear pick among the Little Women cast for Best Supporting Actress. (Meryl Streep is great — she’s Meryl Streep! — as is Laura Dern, but Pugh runs away with it.

Little Women has a chance to land these categories:

• Best Adapted Screenplay
• Best Actress
• Best Original Song

Marriage Story (Netflix)

This film is safely among the films leading this year’s Best Picture race, with Baumbach seemingly set for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Marriage Story should also land the Best Actor for Adam Driver (who is arguably the frontrunner at this point), Best Actress for Scarlett Johansson (which would be her first-ever nomination) and Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern, who plays Johansson’s character’s divorce lawyer.

Knives Out

You may not agree with us on this one, but it does fit in our 2020 Oscars predictions since Daniel Craig’s role is receiving buzz. This film is genius when it comes to a “who done it” style film with twists. Knives Out is one of the most entertaining movies of 2019. A perfectly designed puzzle box that is equal parts surprising and hilarious, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out is turning out to be the surprise sleeper hit of the holiday season

The Farewell

Lulu Wang’s The Farewell is an illuminating portrait of culture clash felt by those who actually live it. The story of a young woman who grew up in America with idyllic memories of her childhood and grandmother in China. This should be the film that gets Awkwafina a Best Actress nomination.

Rocketman

The Elton John film, Rocketman is a formulaic musical biopic, but one that does the clichés better than most by leaning into the “musical” label with free-flowing, non-diegetic musical numbers.

Avengers Endgame

Disney and Marvel joins our list of 2020 Oscars predictions since the studio is gunning to get Robert Downey Jr. an Oscar nomination for his role as Iron Man in the final Avengers film. Like last year’s Black Panther, the studio is also gunning for Best Movie, Director and Special Effects.

Dolemite Is My Name

Most of the Oscar buzz for “Dolemite is My Name” is going to Eddie Murphy for his performance as real-life comedian Rudy Ray Moore. The other aspect is that screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski their long-overdue first nominations.

Frozen 2

The long-awaited sequel to Frozen, Frozen 2 continues the story of two sisters with an origin tale. It brings Anna and Elsa’s story full circle along with beautiful new songs.

Toy Story 4

Disney’s final Toy Story movie in the franchise says goodbye to the beloved characters in Toy Story 4. Once again Disney will land in two categories for this one.

Disney’s The Lion King is another one of the 25 live-action remakes that have been released. We see this only landing in two categories.

LucasFilm and Disney final got smart and brought back JJ Abrams to wrap up the Skywalker saga and repair what was ruin in The Last Jedi. We see this movie landing in two categories this Oscar season.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

An earnest and a sentimental biopic about Mister Rogers (that isn’t focused on Mister Rogers), A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood looks like Oscar bait from the outside. Fortunately, director Marielle Heller makes it better than that. We expect Tom Hanks to take home gold with his performance hands down.

The Safdie Brothers film Uncut Gems just won in the Best Director category at the New York Film Critics Circle. However, it might be too weirdly edgy for traditional Oscar tastes. We see this film making the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay

Downton Abbey

This movie is a standout favorite for fans of the series, but it is also one of those movies that will surely have the best actor and actress nominations.

Last Christmas

This movie is well written, acted and told by director Paul Feig. The story is by Emma Thompson who also wrote the screenplay is another one of our 2020 Oscars predictions. Though we only see this film in a couple of categories.

Hustlers

Director Lorene Scafaria brings to life the true story. The film is based on New York magazine’s 2015 article “The Hustlers at Scores: The Ex-Strippers Who Stole From (Mostly) Rich Men and Gave to, Well, Themselves” by Jessica Pressler. Jennifer Lopez’s performance singled out for praise. Hustlers has been dubbed as one of the ten best films of 2019.

The Report

Soderbergh produced and Scott Z. Burns directs, however, boasts an Annette Bening performance that has Best Supporting Actress potential. Her performance in The Report is superb, this is why we have added this to our 2020 Oscars predictions. Adam Driver’s solid work in this, meanwhile, though he will mostly support his Best Actor campaign for The Marriage Story.
