If you’ve seen Universals Dark Universe movies, The Mummy, and Dracula: Untold, you might realize they’re lacking. Now, horror master, Guillermo del Toro is taking the time to explain why Universals Dark Universe is Failing.

CelebNMusic247.com has a very interesting article about Director Guillermo del Toro, who says that he was offered the chance to direct some “Dark Universe” films in 2007.

It’s 10 years later and now Guillermo del Toro regrets that he didn’t say yes on taking the reins of several properties. Guillermo would have been hands on to helm some form of a “Dark Universe” for Universal Studios but he passed on the opportunity.

Since The Mummy with Tom Cruise was an EPIC FAIL for the Dark Universe, Universal horror movie division is dead for now.

We don’t know about you, but Guillermo del Toro was the perfect man for the job, especially since The Shape of Water is something of a Creature from the Black Lagoon remake. The interesting thing about The Shape of Water is that it may contain the key to bringing iconic monsters back proper.

We understand that Universal wants to reboot their horror movies that made them the studio they are today, but why not do new movies with the same impact.

Del Toro has a genuine love for those monsters.

Speaking with Screen Rant this week, he presented a theory for why modern monster reboots haven’t worked.

Del Toro explains:

“I think that there is a postmodern attitude towards the genre that tries to disarm or disassemble the genre in a postmodern way. And I think that when you approach characters with earnest love, it’s a lot less safe because you’re not above the material. You are high on your own supply and it’s easier to be ironic, so I think that’s part of it.”

He continued:

“But then you have ambivalent things like Jordan Peele nailing it and making it not ironic, but reflexive. And he’s a fusion of reverence and intelligence. It’s a good year for the genre, for sure.”

Maybe Universal can swing back and get Guillermo del Toro, especially now that the Dark Universe is one movie away from being canned. If Creature sucks, that is three strikes for the studio.
