CelebNMovies247.com reports that since Avengers Endgame has wrapped, Robert Downey Jr. has spoken about leaving the franchise forever.
Back in 2019, Robert Downey Jr. spoke on distancing himself from the character of Tony Stark.
He said to CinemaBlend at that time:
Well, here’s the thing. First thing you learn in theater arts: aesthetic distance. I am not this play I’m doing. I’m not a character in The Fantasticks. I’m not Will from Oklahoma. Aesthetic distance, it’s job one. I’m not my work. I’m not what I did with that studio. I’m not that period of time that I spent playing this character. And it sucks because the kid in all of wants to be like ‘No. It’s always gonna be summer camp and we’re all holding hands and singing Kumbaya. Isn’t it?’ It’s like ‘No, no. Snap out of it.’
Earlier in 2020, Downey Jr. stated, “starting up again is off the table.”
He explained while speaking to Joe Rogan on his podcast.
Robert said:
I feel I’ve done all I could with that character. There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious. But the other thing is I want to do other stuff.
That happened this past week and he felt like that finally gave him the closure he needed to say goodbye to Iron man forever.
‘I got to go have dinner with a bunch of the Marvel folks last night and kind of have just a little bit of extra closure.
Downey Jr. said:
You know the movie came out and it was bananas and the directors are sending me pictures of people flipping out in theaters when Tony snaps and I was like ‘whoa’ this is kind of a big cultural thing.
It’s really interesting being here today because last night was this felt like this closing the circle on things a bit.
Then again that’s the hero gig. Part of the journey is the end. What am I even tripping for?
Everything’s gonna workout exactly the way it’s supposed to.
I love you 3000. pic.twitter.com/LkmclFSB3c
