If you recall, like many of us do, you might remember JJ Abrams stated that he was done making sequels and big franchise movies.
It appears that has all changed, because JJ Abrams announced he would be directing Star Wars: Episode IX. But do you know why? Read on…
CelebNMovies247.com has word that J.J. Abrams is back on board to direct Star Wars: Episode IX after he reiterated that he no intention of coming back to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
So quickly how things change.
What was the life changing factor for Abrams? JJ realized he had a chance to finish work that he had begun, and potentially outdo his previous work.
According to Abrams:
“I had no intention to return, but when the opportunity presented itself to finish a story that we had begun with these new characters, to tell the last chapter of their story, it felt like there was a chance to do it in a way where we could go beyond, and do better than we did in VII.”
If you also recall JJ Abrams was never really out of the picture, he remained on board the franchise as a producer after directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rian Johnson is directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi which is coming out next week, and Colin Trevorrow was originally tapped to direct Star Wars: Episode IX. It was also revealed that Kathleen Kennedy has her eyes set on Thor Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to direct a Star Wars film, but that has nothing to do with Star Wars: Episode IX.

What happened to Colin Trevorrow?
It’s simple, like Phil Lord and Chris Miller on Solo: A Star Wars Story, LucasFilm head honcho Kathleen Kennedy weren’t seeing eye to eye on the vision of Episode IX so Trevorrow walked off the project. We have to thank Kennedy for upholding the fabric of Star Wars by keeping the films consistent and giving fans the vision what George Lucas intended.
Why JJ Abrams said yes to Episode IX?
It only made sense to go back to JJ, according to Kathleen Kennedy. He made a success of The Force Awakens, and now, Abrams explains to Rolling Stone why he said yes. Abrams now has a chance to make the end of the trilogy even better based on what he learned the first time around.
He reveals:
“I learned so much in that movie and I saw that this was a chance to sort of realize something that we hadn’t quite achieved — and part of that was it was simply the beginning of these new characters and their story. The opportunity to sort of take what we had learned, to take the feeling of who these characters are and what they are and give them a final chapter that felt in the spirit of what we begun? It was too delicious of an opportunity to pass up.”
All we have now is to wonder which characters will be in Star Wars: Episode IX, but that fans of Star Wars will have a much better idea once Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuts next week.
Until then…
