DFF reports that Disney may have had their eye on Keke Palmer (Scream Queens) and Zendaya (The Greatest Showman) as the singing mermaid – however, nothing is set in stone and it’s unknown if the studio has spoken to either actress. For her Prince Eric? Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther).
The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but is expected to be filmed in Puerto Rico and Cape Town. It will be helmed by Rob Marshall (Pirates of The Caribbean), written by Jane Goldman (Stardust), and feature music composed by Alan Menken (every Disney movies of the 90s) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana).
This isn’t the first time a The Little Mermaid adaptation chose colorblind casting. Paving the way with the 2008 Broadway adaptation, King Triton was portrayed by the magnificent, Tony Away Nominee, Norm Lewis, and Sabastian was brought to life by Tituss Burgess (Kimmy Schmidt).
